Events and Activities

Events provide funding for the Society's mission as well as the Roswell Historical Society/City of Roswell Research Library & Archives and the Hembree Farm Historic Site Preservation Project.

 Educational events and historical exhibits are offered periodically as part of the Society's mission to preserve and share the history and heritage of Roswell.

Month of May 2010 -  The Roswell Historical Society will present an exhibit at the Roswell Branch of the Fulton County Library in observance of Historic Preservation Month and the City of Roswell's Heritage Days in May. The exhibit entitled "Family Matters: Legacies of the Kings and the Hembrees of Roswell, Georgia" contrasts the parallel lives of two pioneer Roswell families. (FREE during library hours)
 
September 30, 2010 - RHS Celebrity Roast 2010, an evening of fun and entertainment as we skewer local celebrities.  The 2010 event will be held at the Doubletree Hotel, Roswell.  Roastees are:  Rev. Malone Dodson, Ms. Jacque Digieso, and Mr. Bob Hagan.  Tickets go on sale June 30th.  Call 770-992-1665 for information.
 
 October 2 & 3 - The 2nd Annual Great Flea Fling at Hembree FarmA huge flea market / yard sale held on the grounds and for benefit of the Hembree Farm Historic Site preservation project.  8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, free admission.  Donations for the sale are welcome.  For information please call 770-992-1665.

Event: Bow Tie Bar-B-Que at Tillie’s Roadhouse on Stroup Road in Roswell

Hosts:  Aubrey and Mary Jo Osteen, Denny and Darlene Walsh, Jeff and Janet Kincaid, Dave and Marijo Tuttle

Celebrity Guest: Roswell Mayor Jere Wood

Description: Wear your most festive bow tie or tie, your comfy jeans and meet us at “Tillie’s Roadhouse” for a southern-style barbeque. Mayor Wood will star in a signature bow tie fashion show and the band The Bow Ties will entertain with their bluegrass sounds as we tap our feet to the beat of the night.

Description:  Recipes the Hembree ladies loved to make — cakes, pies, and other desserts with a few savory baked items as well.  Beverages will include coffee, iced tea, water, wine and an adult punch.  Held in Marie and Ozella ‘s little green house, 780 Hembree Rd

Event:   Harvest Celebration at the Archibald Smith Plantation, 935 Alpharetta St, Roswell

Hosts:   Dave and Marijo Tuttle, Rick and Judy Meer, Louise Valine, Archie and Clara Ricard, Bill and Anne Bersson, James and Katherine Wagy.

Description:  Take a step back in time.  Celebrate the harvest as it was at the Smith Plantation.  Unwind to the music, dine on the foods of the season and meet artisans of the time.  Join us as we find out first-hand about leisure time games and activities that exemplify the antebellum era.

Event:   Wine Tasting and Holiday Gala at Whitehall, 10975 Stroup Road, Roswell

Host:     Bob Hagan

Description:  Wrap yourself in the warmth and magic of the holiday season and enjoy an elegant evening at one of Roswell’s finest homes.  During the holidays, Whitehall transforms into a Christmas Wonderland, dressing up in an array of festive colors, glittering garlands and twinkling lights.  Join us as we sip gourmet wines and sample a fitting assortment of delicious appetizers. You’ll depart this elegant event charmed with the allure of the holiday spirit.

Our annual "Dinner Ya'll" schedule features a variety of themed parties, dining, and wine tasting.  A series of exciting social events help fund the Society's Research Library & Archives.

"Beyond My Stone"-- Interpreters in period dress portray early Roswell residents interred in Roswell's historic cemeteries. Walk among the graves with our actors as they add true stories to the inscriptions on the stones.

We offer special programs, such as lecture series on historical topics or presentations by distinguished speakers. A recent lecture series was presented by our Archivist on the subject of American home interiors, architecture, and decorative arts from 1700 - 1900.

We mount periodic exhibits with historical themes. Exhibits feature materials held in our Archives, including photographs, artifacts, textiles, vintage clothing, and documents or objects relating to Roswell history.

Walk with History interpreters in period dress relate the facts of Roswell's past on an annual stroll through the historic district.
